Sholay & Aag

The two Bollywood clips have distinctive contrasts between each other; globalisation has affected the way the latest Bollywood clip has been mediated. Globalisation has westernised media texts from the East. The directors’ portrayal of women and the mise en scene has changed the genre significantly. Also the representation of women has been kept the same however more provocative, and beautiful.

In the Sholay clip there is only one women depicted in the scene and also her belly dancing is seen more of an exotic dance or entertainment for men. The female character is wearing revealing traditional Indian clothes which is eye catching as the bright high colours of the dress connotes her youth and sexual appeal to men, also the as the dress is revealing the female can be seen as a sexual object to men enforcing the ideologies of patriarchal order and. Additionally the character is dehumanized as female is crowed and looked at by various men only to be depicted as a sexually demeaning object, this highlights Mulvey’s theory on the male gaze as this is seen in the film as well as the male audiences gazing. Moreover the scenes musical sound is played within an instrument by a male seen on in the clip this gives the film authenticity and realism, additionally the clip mostly incorporates continuity editing this makes the scene flow and uses some cuts to depict facial expressions. Furthermore the dance is portrayed as natural and not constructed giving the effect of realism.

“Aag” on the other hand portrays women in a more provocative way, they are wearing more revealing clothing this could be due to the fact of globalisation; Bollywood becoming more westernised and ideologies of western society being integrated in the Eastern civilisation. Cultural homogenisation has taken over as directors of today have become more influenced by western representations of women and society. In the scene instead of one woman there are several provocative and sexually appealing women, this shows that Mulvey’s theory is still in effect and women are represented as sexual objects and imposing the patriarchal society. Women are portrayed as “eye candy “and only in films to attract the male audience, and a duty to fulfil their sexual desires and fantasies. Moreover, the scene uses various close ups and numerous cuts also the dance is depicted as choreographed, this depicts that the scene is filmed more like a music video on Zee music which is influenced by western music videos seen on channel like MTV, this can be seen as the genre has been changed as the dancing in contrast to Sholay has been modified and mediated to fulfil the requirements of today’s audience.

Sholay and Aag are presented to the audience in different ways as films from the 21’st century have been westernised and have adapted to certain techniques such as quick cuts and close ups. The Bollywood film industry and this genre has been McDonalised and due to the digital revolution media texts are shot in more intricate shots and depicting women as fetishists which may be because of the male backlash from the 90’s till this present day.
